Dr. William O. Beeman: Iran, the U.S. and the Potential for Peace in the Mideast

Dr. Beeman will speak on the status of U.S. & Iran relations, the current political situation in Iran, and the potential for peace in the Middle East.

William O. Beeman is professor and chair of the Anthropology Department at the University of Minnesota. He was previously professor of anthropology and director of Middle East studies at Brown University. He has lived and conducted research for over thirty years in all areas of the Middle East. He had served as a consultant to the U.S. State Department and the Department of Defense, and has testified before Congress on Middle East affairs. He is president of the Middle East section of the American Anthropological Association.

Dr. Beeman is the author of The Great Satan vs. the Mad Mullahs: How the United States and Iran Demonize Each Other. This book, and others by Dr. Beeman, will be available for sale at the event.

Minnesota Neighbors for Peace Metro-Wide Potluck Picnic

4:00–8:00 p.m.

Newell Park, 900 North Fairview Avenue (corner of Fairview and Pierce Butler Route), St. Paul

All friends and neighbors interested in supporting efforts for peace and justice are welcome! Please join us for this fun annual picnic — a time to feast and socialize with friends old and new while enjoying a beautiful summer evening.

Please bring a dish to share as well as your own beverages, and blanket or lawn chair. Grills are available at the park and charcoal will be provided. Plates, utensils, napkins, and cups will also be provided.

Notes: No alcohol is allowed in the park and dogs must be on a leash at all times. Politicians and public office-holders are welcome to attend, but no stump speeches, please.

Whether this is your first Neighbors for Peace picnic or your eighth, we look forward to seeing you!

Join Merriam Park Neighbors for Peace at a screening of the new film, Rethink Afghanistan. Rethink Afghanistan is a ground-breaking, full-length documentary focusing on the key issues surrounding this war. The filmmakers hope to educate the public about what is going on Afghanistan and inspire them to challenge policymakers to address critical questions in Congress oversight hearings. Rethink Afghanistan is a Brave New Foundation production

The film is 75 minutes, followed by a short discussion. Free, but donations accepted.

The Reverend Billy, spiritual leader of the Church of Life After Shopping, is coming to the Twin Cities just in time for the start of the holiday shopping season. The Reverend Billy brings the gospel of sustainable consumption — using local shops and establishing strong local economies instead of supporting multi-national chain stores.

It's Sunday, so worship at the Church of Life After Shopping! The Reverend Billy ends his weekend in Minnesota with an appearance at Macalester College. Celebrate with others who are buying local and practicing sustainable consumption.

No admission charge; the offering plate will be passed.

Some of the footage was shot in 2005 at the Mall of America, with many Twin Cities believers appearing in an impromptu demonstration.

Bring a candle and join neighbors from throughout the Twin Cities to quietly witness for peaceful solutions to world problems.
